When considering a marriage proposal, it is natural to feel anxious. You might ask yourself: Is this person truly the right partner for me? Will our future be peaceful?

In our Islamic tradition, we are gifted with a powerful spiritual tool called Salatul-Istikhara—the prayer of seeking Divine guidance.

Unfortunately, many misconceptions surround Istikhara in Sri Lanka. Many believe you must see a dream with green or red colors, or wait for an elder to pray on your behalf. In this guide, we clarify the authentic, simple method of performing Istikhara and how to understand its results.

1. What is Salatul-Istikhara? The word *Istikhara* literally means "to seek goodness and guidance." When you have two permissible choices—such as accepting a marriage proposal or declining it—you perform Istikhara to ask Allah to guide your steps toward what is best for your worldly life and your spiritual well-being.

Important Note: Istikhara should only be performed after you have done your basic research. You should verify the candidate’s character, talk about expectations, and feel a general sense of interest first.

2. Can Someone Else Pray Istikhara for Me? No. The Sunnah teaches that the person who is making the life decision should perform the prayer themselves. You do not need an intermediary or a scholar to pray for your marriage. Your personal, sincere prayer to Allah is the most beloved.

3. Step-by-Step Guide: How to Pray Istikhara Performing Istikhara is simple and takes less than 10 minutes:

  • Perform Clean Wudhu (Ablution).
  • Pray Two Voluntary Units (Rakahs): You can pray this at any permissible time of day or night (praying before sleeping or during Tahajjud is especially peaceful).
  • - In the first Rakah, recite Surah Al-Fatihah followed by any Surah you know.
  • - In the second Rakah, recite Surah Al-Fatihah followed by another Surah.
  • Complete the Prayer with Salaam.
  • Recite the Beautiful Istikhara Du’a: Praise Allah, send blessings on the Prophet (peace be upon him), and read the authentic supplication with sincere reflection on its meaning.

4. The Meaning of the Istikhara Du’a In this supplication, you say:

*"O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power. You know and I do not know; You have power and I do not; and You are the Knower of the unseen.* > > *O Allah, if You know that this matter [mention the proposal with candidate's name] is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me.* > > *And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it."*

5. How to Interpret the Signs (Common Myths Cleared) Many people mistakenly wait for vivid dreams or signs in the sky. Here is how authentic Istikhara actually manifests:

  • Ease in Circumstances: If the proposal is good for you, Allah makes the subsequent steps flow smoothly. Family discussions proceed easily, background checks come back positive, and both families feel mutual warmth and peace.
  • Obstacles & Natural Closure: If the proposal is not good for you, subtle or clear obstacles will arise. Disagreements on basic values emerge, unresolvable issues appear, or you feel a persistent lack of peace in your heart, leading to a natural and graceful exit.
  • Inner Clarity and Contentment: You will find your heart naturally leaning toward a decision without anxiety.

6. Taking Action with Faith (Tawakkul) Istikhara is not an excuse for passivity. Once you have prayed and consulted wise family members, take the next practical step with faith. Trust that whatever unfolds is part of Allah’s wise plan for your happiness and spiritual growth. ---
